Both events are free of charge and open to the public. On June 13, she will stop at the Newburgh Free Library in Newburgh, New York. Medina will begin her tour at the Calcasieu Parish Public Library in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on May 9. On her tour, the Library of Congress says, Medina “will inspire students and families to experiment with ‘book talks’-the process of sharing books to start conversations and build excitement about reading.” The tour is part of Medina’s Cuéntame!: Let’s Talk Books program, which the library says “builds connection in classrooms, libraries, communities and within families.” ![]() She is a prolific author of books for children and young adults, including The Girl Who Could Silence the Wind, Burn Baby Burn, and Merci Suárez Changes Gears, which won the Newbery Medal and was a finalist for the Kirkus Prize. Medina was appointed to the position in January, taking over from author Jason Reynolds.
